What it smells like.
Brown sugar is sweetness with moisture in it: molasses, a little toasted, warmer and rounder than white sugar. It smells of baking rather than confectionery.
It gives gourmand blends their comfort and it holds well on skin. On its own it is one-dimensional, so it wants something dry or boozy beside it to give the sweetness some shape.
