What it smells like.
Brazilian rosewood smells of warm timber with a distinct rosy, faintly spicy sweetness running through it. It is softer than cedarwood and less creamy than sandalwood, sitting somewhere between a wood and a floral.
It smooths a blend out and adds warmth without weight. Under florals it deepens them; over citrus it gives a fresh opening somewhere soft to land.
True rosewood oil, rich in the floral-woody molecule linalool, was once distilled from Amazonian trees in quantities the forest could not afford. The species is now protected under CITES and the note is recreated, which is the only version of it worth wearing. What survives is the smell: polished wood with a rose light inside it.
