What it smells like.
Sandalwood is wood without dryness: soft, creamy, faintly milky, with a warmth that sits right against the skin. It is one of the few base notes that people describe as comforting rather than serious, and it almost never offends anyone.
It is the great smoother. Under tuberose or jasmine it takes the shrillness out of a big white floral; under iris it adds warmth to something austere. Its one limitation is projection. Sandalwood stays close, so if you want a blend people notice across a room, pair it with something louder.
True sandalwood oil is distilled from the heartwood of a tree that takes decades to mature, and overharvesting in India pushed the species to the brink. Much of the world's certified supply is now grown in plantations in northern Australia, which we will admit to finding quietly satisfying.
