Lavender.
Clean herbal floral, cool at the top and faintly sweet underneath.
Our read on the material, not a measurement.
What it smells like.
Lavender sits between a herb and a flower. The top of it is cool, camphorous and clean; underneath there is a soft, almost honeyed sweetness. It is one of the most recognisable materials in perfumery, which is both its strength and its problem.
It makes a blend smell composed, and over tonka or vanilla it produces the warm, powdery accord that has anchored classic masculine fragrances for a century. That familiarity is the thing to watch: too much lavender and the blend stops smelling like yours and starts smelling like a shaving soap. A little sage or cardamom keeps it modern.
Lavender oil is distilled from the flowering tops of a plant that has been farmed for scent since Roman times, most famously across Provence. It is the backbone of the fougère, the oldest continuously worn fragrance structure there is, and it remains the fastest way to make a composition read as clean.
