What it smells like.
Lavender sits between a herb and a flower. The top of it is cool, camphorous and clean; underneath there is a soft, almost honeyed sweetness. It is one of the most recognisable materials in perfumery, which is both its strength and its problem.
It makes a blend smell composed, and over tonka or vanilla it produces the warm, powdery accord that has anchored classic masculine fragrances for a century. That familiarity is the thing to watch: too much lavender and the blend stops smelling like yours and starts smelling like a shaving soap. A little sage or cardamom keeps it modern.

The classic groomed note. Lavender reads as fresh and tidy. It also reads as barbershop, so it can date a blend if you lean on it.
Aromatic. Herbal and green, closer to a garden than a bouquet.
