Cedarwood.
Dry, polished woods for a clean, lasting finish.
Our read on the material, not a measurement.
What it smells like.
Cedarwood is dry, clean and pencil-sharp, with a faint sweetness and no smoke. It is the most straightforwardly pleasant wood in the range: it does not go dusty like patchouli or heavy like oud, and it reads as tidy rather than dramatic.
If you are not sure what base to pick, pick this one. It gives fruit somewhere to land, it keeps florals from turning powdery, and it makes fresh blends last longer than they otherwise would. Its only weakness is character. Cedarwood will not make a blend memorable on its own, so give it a distinctive top or heart.
Most cedarwood oil comes from junipers and cypresses rather than true cedars, distilled from wood, stumps and sawdust: perfumery has never been precious about botany when the smell is right. The smell in question is the inside of a pencil box, and it is one of the most steadying bases there is.
