What it smells like.

Tonka smells like almond, hay and warm sugar with a faint tobacco darkness behind it. It is sweet, but there is a dryness to it that vanilla does not have, which is why it reads as comforting rather than edible.

It is the base to choose when you want warmth without a gourmand result. Under lavender it produces the classic powdery masculine accord; under cherry or rum it turns rich and cold-weather. It is also the safest partner for almost anything on the top row, which makes it a good default if you are unsure.

Tonka beans are the wrinkled black seeds of a South American tree, and their scent is dominated by coumarin: hay, almond and vanilla folded into one molecule. Coumarin was also the first scent material ever synthesised, in 1868, which makes tonka a bridge between natural perfumery and modern chemistry.
