Build with nutmeg at the bench

What it smells like.

Nutmeg is warm and dusty rather than sharp. It is sweeter and rounder than clove or cinnamon, with a woody dryness that keeps it from reading as food. Of the spices on the bench it is the most comfortable and the least demanding.

It is a good choice when a blend feels slightly hollow in the middle. Over tonka and sandalwood it makes something soft and cold-weather; with mandarin it adds body to citrus. Because it sits close to the skin it will not announce itself, so it is a texture pick rather than a statement.

The oil is distilled from the grated seed of the nutmeg tree, and it smells sharper and fresher than the baking-spice memory suggests: almost peppery at the top, warm and woody underneath. It is a spice that seasons a blend rather than sweetening it.
