What it smells like.
Olibanum is frankincense: a dry, resinous incense with a cool, faintly lemony brightness at the top and a smoky depth underneath. It smells still and slightly ceremonial.
It gives a blend gravity and an airy smokiness that is quite different from charred wood. It suits rose and oud and it makes gourmand sweetness feel less domestic.
Olibanum is frankincense: resin tapped from Boswellia trees in the Horn of Africa and southern Arabia, hardening into the pale tears that have been burnt in temples for thousands of years. Distilled instead of burnt, it smells citrusy and peppery over the expected incense depth, older than every trend it appears in.
