What it smells like.

Vetiver is root, not wood. It smells dry, smoky and a little bitter, with a cool grassy quality and a faint earthiness underneath. It is one of the few materials that is genuinely refreshing and dark at the same time.

It is a corrective note. Over sweet fruit it pulls the whole blend back towards serious; under citrus it makes a fresh fragrance last well past the point where citrus alone would have gone. If you wanted comfort or sweetness, vetiver is the note that will quietly work against you.

Vetiver oil is distilled from the washed and dried roots of a tall tropical grass, most of it grown in Haiti, Java and Réunion. The roots grow metres deep, and the oil smells like where it has been: earth, damp green and cut grass with a smoky mineral edge. It anchors a fragrance like almost nothing else.
