What it smells like.
Neroli comes from the same flower as orange blossom but smells markedly different: greener, more bitter and much fresher, with a clean citrus lift and none of the honeyed weight.
It gives an opening a floral brightness that citrus alone cannot manage and it reads as crisp and unisex. It is short-lived, like the citrus family it sits beside.
Neroli is steam-distilled from bitter orange blossom and named for a 17th-century Princess of Nerola who scented her gloves with it. The same flowers, solvent-extracted, become orange blossom absolute: neroli is the fresher, greener, more upright of the two. It remains the heart of classical eau de cologne.
