What it smells like.
Musk is warmth rather than a smell you can point at: soft, slightly powdery, skin-like and faintly sweet. Modern musks are clean and diffuse rather than animalic, and they are among the most widely used materials in perfumery.
It blurs the joins in a formula and makes a blend feel personal, as though it is coming from the person rather than the bottle. It also extends everything around it, which is why so many fragrances have it underneath.
Musk once came from the musk deer, and the trade nearly destroyed the animal before perfumery abandoned it for synthetics. The white musks used today are clean, skin-like molecules with a strange property: some people cannot smell certain ones at all, which is why the same fragrance can wear so differently on two people.
