What it smells like.
Moss smells of damp shade: green, earthy, faintly bitter and a little inky. It is the material that gives the classic chypre structure its dark green floor.
It grounds a blend and adds a natural, outdoors depth that woods alone cannot. It is dry and slightly austere, and it works against sweetness rather than with it.
The classic material is oakmoss, a lichen gathered from oaks in the Balkans, and it built the entire chypre category: forest floor, ink and quiet damp. Because two of its components are now strictly limited by IFRA safety standards, modern moss notes, ours included, are low-atranol or rebuilt versions of that inheritance.
