What it smells like.
Mandarin is the sweetest of the citrus notes and the least sharp. Where bergamot is dry and grapefruit is tart, mandarin is round and juicy, closer to the peel of a satsuma than to lemon. It is the citrus most people find immediately likeable.
It is the citrus to choose when the base is sweet. Over vanilla, caramel or tonka it reads as warm rather than clashing, which is a problem grapefruit has. It fades fast, like all citrus, so treat it as the first impression and let the heart carry the rest.
Mandarin oil is cold-pressed from the peel and it is the gentlest of the citrus family: sweeter than orange, softer than lemon, with none of grapefruit's bite. That mildness is the point. Where a sharp citrus can read as cleaning product, mandarin reads as fruit.
