What it smells like.
Raspberry is sweet, bright and a little tart, with a soft fuzz to it that strawberry does not have. It reads as fresh fruit rather than jam, which is why it stays on the right side of sweet even in a gourmand blend.
It is the most forgiving berry on the bench. It lifts florals, it softens woods, and it gives vanilla and tonka something to sparkle against. If you want a blend that reads as pretty and wearable rather than daring, raspberry is a very safe first pick.
Raspberry is a built note. The molecule most responsible for the smell of the real fruit occurs in it at vanishingly small amounts, far too little to harvest, so perfumers construct the berry from synthetics and fruit-adjacent naturals. Built well, it smells riper than the real thing.
