Rose is fresh, sweet and green all at once: petals, stem and a soft honeyed centre. It is the most written-about material in perfumery and one of very few that smells finished on its own.
It anchors a floral heart and takes almost any direction you point it: bright with pink pepper, dark with oud, earthy with patchouli. It is assertive, and other large florals tend to get lost beside it.
Rose is the most studied flower in perfumery: hundreds of molecules make up the smell of a garden rose, and no two rose materials agree on which matter most. Between damascena, centifolia and modern synthetics, a perfumer can build a rose that is dewy, dark, sharp or jammy. Ours is the fresh-cut kind.
