It bridges spice and leather better than anything else and it is superb over oud and rose. It is dominant for a heart note, so it tends to define a blend rather than support it.
Saffron is the hand-picked stigmas of the autumn crocus, and it takes well over a hundred thousand flowers to gather a kilogram, which keeps it the most expensive spice in the world. In scent it is leathery, honeyed and faintly medicinal, and its signature molecule, safranal, does most of that talking.
