Ylang-ylang is a heady tropical floral with a creamy, almost banana-like sweetness and a spicy, faintly rubbery edge. It is one of the more unusual white florals and it reads as warm rather than fresh.
It gives a floral heart richness and an exotic character, and it sits well under jasmine and over sandalwood. It is assertive and it can smell overripe if it is overdone.
Ylang ylang is distilled from the drooping yellow flowers of a tropical tree grown across the Comoros and Madagascar, and the distillation is drawn off in stages: the first fraction is the richest and most prized. The name means flower of flowers, and the scent argues the point: banana-custard sweetness over jasmine depth.
