Amber.
Warm resin and soft powder. Golden rather than sweet.
Our read on the material, not a measurement.
What it smells like.
Amber in perfumery is not the fossilised resin. It is an accord built to smell golden: warm, resinous, faintly powdery and slightly sweet, with a balsamic depth. It is the note behind most fragrances people describe as warm or rich.
It gives a blend a sense of warmth that seems to come from underneath everything else. Over spices it turns opulent, under florals it adds a soft, dusty finish. It is heavier than white amber and much more present, so it suits cool weather better than heat.
