Papyrus smells of dry reed: papery, faintly smoky, dusty and quite austere, with a vetiver-like bitterness. It is one of the driest materials in perfumery.
It gives a blend texture and a modern, minimal quality. It cuts sweetness sharply and pairs well with vetiver and cedarwood, where it makes the whole base feel arid.
The oil, often traded as cypriol or nagarmotha, is distilled from the roots of a sedge grass that grows across India. It smells of dry woodsmoke, earth and something like old paper, and perfumers reach for it when a composition needs the atmosphere of oud without the density.
