Gardenia.
Creamy white petals with a green, mushroomy underside.
Our read on the material, not a measurement.
What it smells like.
Gardenia is creamy and heady like tuberose but with a curious green, faintly mushroomy quality underneath that makes it smell convincingly like a real flower rather than a perfume note.
It gives a floral heart body and realism. It is rich and quite dominant, and that green underside means it does not always read as conventionally pretty, which is usually its appeal.
Gardenia extraction has never been commercially practical, so the great gardenia perfumes have always been recreations, built from creamy lactones, jasmine and green notes. The flower itself is famously worn rather than bottled: pinned to lapels and hair long before it was recreated in a lab.
